How many cans will I need to buy for my Ford F-150 Club Cab?
To achieve the proper wet/dry film build 12-15 cans are required to cover the entire undercarriage.
Can Original Black Wax be thinned down for use in my undercoating gun?
If necessary, the Original Black Wax can be reduced with mineral spirits up to 5% of the volume of the full bodied product to lower the viscosity. You can also reduce the Rubberized up to 5% with Acetone, Toulene, Xyleme, or lacquer thinner.
If you reduce the product, please ensure the correct wet/dry film thickness is deposited on the substrate to achieve the full protection afforded by the full bodied product. Both products' film thickness can be measured with our wet film thickness gauge. The wax can be measured with that gauge after the mineral spirits has been evaporated too.
I'm looking into the Rubberized product and cannot find the coverage rate per can in your Product Data Sheet (PDS). Do you have an approximate square footage one can will cover at 1 mil, dry film thickness (DFT)? The PDS recommends the coating to be applied at 8-10 mils, can this be achieved in a single coat using the aerosol spray can? Can you tell me what the wet film thickness is to achieve 8-10 mils DFT?
The Rubberized theoretical coverage is 7.5 square feet/can at the recommended DFT. We did not check the coverage at 1 mil, but your inqury may result in our folks looking into it.
The sag resistance of the Rubberized should permit you to apply the recommended film thickness in a single application. It will require more than one pass over the substrate surface. You would have to be moving the can quite slowly to achieve the required film thickness with one pass. I am differentiating between one single coat and one pass over the substrate.
What is the best thinner for your Rubberized Undercoating?
It can be thinned with Xylene, Toluene, Acetone or VM&P Naphtha.
Do you sell an undercoating that can be painted?
The Undercoating In A Can Rubberized is formulated to provide excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance and it can be top coated with automotive grade paint after the Rubberized has fully cured.
What is the coverage in square feet of 1 qt. of your brushable Rubberized undercoating?
The Rubberized at the recommended film thickness of 8-10 dry film mils will cover 49-62 square feet per gallon. At 10 dry film mils it covers 49 square feet and at 8 mils DFT it will cover 62.
Shelf life varies depending on the environment the product is stored in.
Storage of aerosol cans should be done in an area below 120°F (55°C), and away from heat sources. Storage of non-aerosol versions are good at minimum two years from date of manufacture, but typically last much longer stored in a controlled, safe environment.
How does undercoating hold up over time?
With proper surface prep and the correct MIL thickness applied, you can expect the following results:
Can undercoating prevent paint chips or scratches?
Our undercoating products can greatly reduce the opportunity for chipping and scratching to occur, however, we cannot say it will completely prevent chipping or scratches. Our Wax and Rubberized coatings both perform quite well in ASTM & GM testing protocols aimed at measuring chip resistance at ambient and below 0°F temperatures, but they perform in different ways. The Wax coatings can be nicked, but when the wax warms back up, it tends to flow back together covering up the mark. The Rubberized coating technology simply repels chips.
Is Clear wax safe on plastic and rubber fibers, or must these things be covered when used under the car?
The Clear Wax has not exhibited any issues when applied over multiple substrates including plastic and rubber. The Clear Wax is a mineral spirits solvent base clear wax undercoating. The mineral spirits evaporates in 24-48 hours depending on film thickness, temperature and air movement over the substrate.
Will the Undercoating in a Can Black Wax be a compatible touch up coating for my 2024 GMC Sierra 1500? Are there any other products you would recommend for touching up my factory undercoating?
The Undercoating in a Can Original Black Wax is compatible with the GM Black Hot Melt Frame Wax. You should not encounter any issues spraying the Black Wax over the GM wax.
I would like to use your Clear Wax product to coat the underside of my new Tacoma. How long does it last? Will this product work for this application? Approximately how much will I need?
The Clear Wax will protect your Tacoma from corrosion and when it's applied at the recommended wet/dry film thickness, you can expect 3+ years of protection. We suggest buying a gauge with your undercoating to ensure you deposit the required thickness. Our customers typically apply 12-18 cans when undercoating a full size pickup truck.
