We use Undercoating In A Can in our shop. Are there any concerns spraying your product onto Chevy trucks with the wax based material the factory uses? Will it drip?
The Original Black Wax is compatible with the hot melt dip factory wax applied to GM SUVs and Truck chassis. The Original Black Wax has good sag resistance but will drip if over applied.
I'm interested in purchasing your Original Black Wax. I have a 2004 Dodge Ram, but my question is, do I have to clean and remove rust before applying? I do have some rust in areas and dirt in others.
The maximum performance of the Original Black Wax is achieved when the substrate is clean, dry, and free of rust, oil and mil scale. Any coating performs best when applied over a properly prepared surface. However, the Original Black Wax will perform well over less than perfect substrates as well. If the rust/corrosion is tightly adhering to the metal, you will still receive good protection, but any loose rust or scale should be removed first. Typically, a good pressure washing of the underbody will prepare the substrate for the wax.
If the product is applied to the recommended dry film thickness of 5 mils dry, you can expect up to 5 years of corrosion protection. The substrate preparation plays a significant role in the long term performance of the coating.
How many cans will I need to buy for my Ford F-150 Club Cab?
To achieve the proper wet/dry film build, 12-15 cans are required to cover the entire undercarriage.
I'd like to apply this to the undercarriage of my vehicle, can it be brushed on? I don't have the clearance and I have to be under the vehicle with jack stands to accomplish this.
The coating can be applied with a brush or roller. You may have to reduce it slightly with mineral spirits (no more than 5% of the volume of the full-bodied product). It will also be important to ensure you deposit the minimum of 5 mils dry.
A wet film thickness gauge will help with measuring the coating thickness. The gauge can be used when the product is freshly applied or in its cured state.
The aerosol application can be conducted relatively easily with the car up on jack stands. The Original Black Wax has good sag resistance so it should not be falling all over you.
I live in Utah, with the winter coming up, will lower temperatures affect drying times? During the 24 hour curing process should the car not be driven?
A lower temperature does extend cure time but the car does not need to sit idle for 24 hours before driving. If you can give the coating a couple of hours to set up, you will be fine to drive it.
The water resistance for the waxes and rubberized occurs quickly after application. None of the products are water based, so they will not freeze.
Wanting to see if the Undercoating Wax will be a good product for my 2004 Ford Excursion. It has a little surface rust on the frame but nothing bad. Just from driving it on the beach and ocean water starting a bit of rustiness. Would this work to treat the frame and axles?
The Original Black Wax performs well over light surface rust. It will encapsulate the rust and cut off the oxygen and repel the water necessary for continued corrosion. The wet film thickness gauge will ensure you deposit the required amount of wax for maximum protection.
Any loose rust should be removed with a wire brush or wheel. Thoroughly wash the undercarriage afterwards, removing all dirt and road debris (this can be achieved with a pressure washer or a garden hose). Allow the vehicle to dry before applying any undercoating.
Are there any specialized tools or equipment required for undercoating applications? If so, what tools and materials do I need to apply undercoating?
There are no specialized tools required for applying undercoating, however, we do have tools that can help you apply undercoating with ease.
If you are using any of our Undercoating In A Can aerosol cans, our Comfort Grip Aerosol Trigger can help you apply the undercoating effortlessly and keep your hands clean. For any non-aerosol Undercoating options, you can either use a brush or a spray gun. In the case of spraying on your undercoating, our Quikcoat Precision Sprayer can help getting those hard to reach areas.
No matter the application method, the use of ramps or jack stands can be beneficial to allow for more room under the vehicle.
Can undercoating be applied in any weather conditions?
We recommend applying Undercoating In A Can when the temperature is between 60 - 90 °F, with no precipitation forecasted. High humidity can affect dry/cure times. Wind should also be taken into consideration when applying undercoating outdoors.
How long does it take to apply undercoating?
Time will vary depending on vehicle size and method of application. Most of the time needed will be in vehicle preparation PRIOR to the application. Proper preparation will yield better application results.
Are there any safety precautions I should take during application?
There are several safety precautions to consider during the application of undercoating. Avoid potential exposure to chemicals or particles by wearing protective gear such as safety glasses, gloves, mask and a tyvek suit. Ensure the application area is well-ventilated to prevent buildup of fumes, and avoid any sparks, open flames, or any other potential ignition sources.
Are there different application methods for undercoating? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each application technique?
There are several different application methods, but the two primary techniques are spray-on and brush-on. All of our products can be sprayed and brushed on, while only our Clear Fluid Coat can be dipped. Choosing the appropiate application method depends on factors such as the size of the area to be coated, accessibility, and personal preference. Consider the specific requirements of your undercoating project to determine the most suitable technique. Check out our blog on the advantages and disadvantages of each application method here.
Can undercoating be applied to specific vehicle areas (e.g., undercarriage, wheel wells, frame)?
Undercoating can be applied to specific areas like the undercarriage, wheel wells, and frame to protect against rust and damage. However, it should be avoided on exhaust system components, brake system parts, engine components, drive shafts, wire harnesses and moving parts or linkages to prevent interference with their function and safety. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for proper application guidance.
Can undercoating be applied to vehicles with aftermarket modifications?
In short, yes. Just ensure that the aftermarket part is capable of being coated without disrupting any of its performance characteristics.
Are there any specific recommendations for protecting paint when applying undercoating?
Care should be taken to avoid any overspray from getting on the vehicle's topcoat. The use of masking tape and paper/plastic to cover any areas you are trying to avoid getting coated is highly recommended.
Are there any specific factors that can affect the longevity of undercoating?
Improper preparation and application are the two biggest factors that can affect the advertised longevity of undercoating.
Can undercoating be applied to a leased vehicle?
The undercoating will perform on any vehicle no matter what the purchase or lease status is. The person leasing the vehicle should consult the lease contract to determine if undercoating is permissible.
Is your Clear Fluid Coat product safe to use on truck frames that already have a factory wax coat on them? I have found other products such as Fluid Film actually loosen the factory coating and cause it to peel off the metal making the rust problem worse.
Annual undercoating products like Fluid Film, Wool Wax, NHOU, Carwell and even our own Undercoating in a Can Clear Fluid Coat will soften and delaminate GM Truck and SUV wax from the substrate. However, our Original Black Wax is compatible with the GM hot melt wax and performs well when used with the GM frame wax. We recommend purchasing the wet film thickness gauge to ensure you deposit the required wet/dry film thickness.
